Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal neuralgia is often described as the most intense pain a person can experience. It presents as sudden, stabbing facial pain that typically lasts between 3 to 5 seconds—rarely more than a minute—and can affect one or two areas of the face at once. Around 70–80% of patients are over the age of 40, with women slightly more affected than men.

Main Symptoms

The pain usually occurs on one side of the face and is sharp, intense, and repetitive, often lasting 1–2 minutes per episode. It commonly affects the lips, nose, eyebrows, and oral cavity.

Note: Trigeminal neuralgia is a serious neurological condition. If you experience similar symptoms, seek immediate evaluation at a neurology or neurosurgery clinic.

Common Causes

  • Mental or emotional stress
  • Vascular compression of the trigeminal nerve
  • Viral infections (e.g., shingles)
  • Demyelination disorders (e.g., multiple sclerosis)
